X-PRESS PEARL
X-PRESS PEARL
Project Aim:
To manage the removal, handling, and disposal of debris from the X-PRESS PEARL incident by advising on waste management practices, ensuring regulatory compliance, and collaborating with local authorities and stakeholders.
The X-PRESS PEARL was a containership that caught fire and eventually sank off the coast of Sri Lanka in 2022.
Multiple containers were lost overboard during the incident and Resolve Marine Group were contracted by the P&I Club for the removal of the resulting debris from the seabed and disposal of the debris ashore.
Marittima was appointed by Resolve as their Waste Management Adviser. This involved:
- seeking a consensus-based approach to what was from a regulatory perspective, a unique situation;
- liaison with local authorities, contractors and other stakeholders to determine suitable sampling approaches, appropriate requirements for storage and segregation and determine viable disposal options locally while adhering to national regulations;
- locating and establishing a debris handling facility with local contractors were hired to segregate debris, prepare it for disposal as per the agreed acceptance criteria and arrange transport to the final destination; and,
- development of a waste management plan for all relevant stakeholders to review and approve.
