GMA and Partners Organize National Oil Spill Contingency Plan Validation Workshop
A four day validation workshop for the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan, organized by GMA and its partners April 2024.
On 29th October, I was invited to contribute to an insightful panel discussion at a WISTA UK event, graciously hosted by Brodies LLP in Edinburgh. This special event celebrated WISTA UK’s 50th anniversary and provided an in-depth examination of maritime incident response management, with a particular focus on the response to the KAAMI incident during the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
Our panel was rich with expertise, featuring discussions on a range of critical topics. Stephan Hennig, the SOSREP, emphasised the crucial role of decisive action and clear communication in maritime emergencies. Alexandra Couvadelli from Gard UK detailed the legal and operational complexities of rapid response strategies. Allan Stuart from Waves Group offered insights into the challenges of salvage operations as a Special Casualty Representative. Victoria Anderson from Brodies LLP highlighted the legal frameworks essential for managing liabilities and responsibilities during maritime crises.
I shared my own experiences from attending the incident, focusing on environmental impact mitigation strategies such as the complexities of developing pollution contingency and response plans for a non-standard cargo, the behaviour of which when spilled, we don’t understand and how to manage this wet cargo/waste once on shore. Our combined discussions underscored the necessity of a coordinated approach to safeguard marine environments, ensure crew safety, and effectively manage pollution and navigational hazards.
Brodies LLP offices provided a stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, enhancing the ambiance of our gathering. I extend my gratitude to Duncan MacLean of Brodies LLP for his skilled moderation and to all attendees for their engaging participation.
This event underscored the dynamic and evolving challenges of our industry, highlighting the importance of preparedness and collaboration in maritime incident management. I look forward to more events like this in the Future.

Does maritime casualty management influence the ESG performance of shipowners and their insurers and should broader ESG considerations have anything to do with managing maritime casualties?
There can be no doubt that sustainability is now firmly in front and centre of the maritime industry’s agenda.
